“Justice has a long history here” a voice whispers from the shadows of the Altes Amtsgericht Lubeck. Before you stands a magnificent building a testament to Lubeck’s rich legal past. Its neo-Gothic style is a stark contrast to the older Hanseatic architecture around it. This imposing structure wasn’t always a court.

The Altes Amtsgericht Lubeck has witnessed centuries of legal proceedings. It opened in 1896. Architect Adolf Schwiening designed it. He replaced five older houses. The building’s impressive size contrasts with the smaller scale of the old town. It even incorporates parts of the former Burgkloster monastery. Today a branch of the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Social Services occupies the building. Some rooms are part of the European Hanseatic Museum’s exhibit.

Imagine the hushed whispers of trials the somber pronouncements of judges. The building itself housed the Land- and Stadtgericht. Then it became home to the Kreisgericht. Finally in 1879 it became the Amtsgericht Lubeck. This building saw Lubeck’s justice system evolve. It reflects changes in German law since the Reichsjustizgesetze of 1879. The court had a president not a director. Carsten Lobbert held the post from 2016. He succeeded Dirk Stojan.

The court’s jurisdiction shifted over time. It initially covered areas now in other districts. The expansion of Lubeck meant some areas stayed. Other areas went to courts like Ratzeburg. The Amtsgericht Schleswig became the central debt collection court in 2006. This meant even more cases came through these very doors.

Renovations began in 2017. They forced the court to several locations. The register court stayed at Jerusalemsberg 8. Other locations included Glashuttenweg and Am Flugplatz. The renovations highlight the building’s ongoing role in Lubeck. Lubeck’s unique “Lubecker Praxis” is also noteworthy. It involved cooperation between the youth welfare office. It involved counseling centers lawyers and judges. The goal was the child’s well-being and contact with both parents.
