Look closely at the Alter Wasserturm. This isn’t just any old water tower. It stands tall a testament to Heidelberg’s industrial past. Built in 1907 by Wayss & Freytag this impressive structure served the Grossherzoglich Badischen Staatseisenbahnen. It supplied water to the bustling goods and marshalling yard nearby. This was the first water tower of its kind in Baden built using reinforced concrete in Hennebique system.

The Alter Wasserturm wasn’t just functional. It’s a striking example of early 20th-century architecture. Its abstract floral design echoes the Vienna Secession style. Imagine the workers below looking up at this magnificent structure day after day. They relied on it for their daily tasks. The tower provided a vital lifeline.

For years the Alter Wasserturm stood silent. A relic of a bygone era. Then came a new chapter a new lease on life. Former Hoffenheim footballer Lukas Rupp a Heidelberg native bought the landmark. He saw its potential and its inherent value. His vision? To transform this historical landmark into a vibrant hub for the Bahnstadt community.

The Alter Wasserturm was more than a simple water tower. It represented a piece of Heidelberg’s identity. Rupp’s investment isn’t just financial. It’s an investment in Heidelberg’s heritage. It’s a commitment to preserving history while embracing the future.

Today the plans are underway. A new pavilion will complement the tower. A cafe bar and restaurant will occupy the space. The original spiral staircase will remain intact leading to a lounge area for events. A light installation resembling water droplets will hang above the cocktail bar a nod to the tower’s original function.

The surrounding plaza will be redesigned. There will be natural landscaping with plenty of greenery. This creates a pleasant gathering place for locals workers and tourists alike. The Alter Wasserturm will once again be a focal point a place of community and connection. A true jewel of the Bahnstadt.
