Isn’t it fascinating how buildings can hold so many stories within their walls? Here at the Alter Bahnhof Küdinghoven, we’re standing before a building that has witnessed Küdinghoven’s transformation. This old train station is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a tangible link to the past.

The Alter Bahnhof Küdinghoven once played a vital role. Küdinghoven is now a part of Bonn. It is located in the Beuel district. Imagine the hustle and bustle. Passengers would arrive eager to reach their destinations. Goods would be loaded and unloaded. The station connected Küdinghoven to the wider world.

Küdinghoven itself boasts a rich history. It was once the central church village. It formed its own administrative district. This district included Ramersdorf and Limperich. It also included Oberholtorf, Niederholtorf, Beuel, and half of Bechlinghoven. This was the “Lordship of Küdinghoven”. It belonged to the County of Sayn until the 13th century.

In 1248, the “Lordship of Küdinghoven” passed to Heinrich I of Sponheim. It was a result of female inheritance. His second son, Johann I, took the name “von Löwenberg” in 1269. From this time on, Küdinghoven was under the “Lordship of Löwenberg.”

The medieval seal of Küdinghoven reflects the importance of the place. It was a parish, a high court, and a dominion. Mauritius, a Theban martyr is on the seal. He stands as a knight with a banner lance. He leans on the shield of the Lords of Sponheim-Löwenberg. The other shield bears the arms of the Lords of Heinsberg.

After a brief period under Nassau-Saarbrücken from 1451 to 1469, the “Lordship of Küdinghoven” fell to the Duchy of Jülich-Berg. This lasted for over 300 years. Küdinghoven was an “under court”. This was within the “court” of Dollendorf. The last known administrative building was on the ‘Streff’. The last known administrator lived in Ramersdorf. He was called ‘Judge’. Lindenstrasse and Gerichtsweg connected these places.

Under Napoleon, the parishes of Küdinghoven and Vilich were merged. This formed the municipality of Vilich in 1808. The Rhineland became Prussian in 1815. The municipality of Vilich became the community of Beuel. Beuel received city rights in 1952. Küdinghoven was incorporated into Bonn with Beuel on August 1 1969.

Today, the Alter Bahnhof Küdinghoven stands as a reminder of times gone by. It connects us to the village’s past. Küdinghoven has a population of 2819 as of December 31 2022. The St Gallus church dominates the townscape. Various clubs maintain traditions. The Junggesellenverein Concordia Küdinghoven is one such club. It was founded in 1848. It is known for the Maifest and an egg crown. The Schützenverein St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Küdinghoven e. V. has existed since 1333.

As we stand here, let’s appreciate the history embedded in this building. The Alter Bahnhof Küdinghoven is a landmark. It connects us to Küdinghoven’s story. It links us to Bonn’s broader narrative.
