The Alte Weser, once a bend in the mighty Weser, now stands as a tranquil reminder of the river’s ever-changing nature. Here in Dreye, part of the Weyhe community, the Alte Weser invites you to step back in time. Imagine the Weser, a powerful force carving its way through the landscape. In the 1960s, sand excavation transformed this old river bend. The Alte Weser expanded, becoming the lake we see today. This serene body of water, nestled between the Weser and its protective dike, still maintains a connection to the main river. A sluice links it to the Dreyer Hafen, allowing the waters to mingle and share stories. From the south, a drainage ditch feeds into the Alte Weser, adding another layer to the tapestry of its waters. The Alte Weser beckons with opportunities for both relaxation and recreation. Locals and visitors alike come to swim in its cool waters and cast lines in hopes of a plentiful catch. Be aware, though, sometimes in the summer, blue-green algae can temporarily affect the water quality. The shores of the Alte Weser are fringed with reeds and tall grasses, creating a haven for wildlife. Beyond this natural border, meadows and pastures stretch out, painting a picture of rural tranquility. Two natural bathing areas, complete with sandy beaches, welcome you on the eastern and southwestern sides of the lake. As you relax on the warm sand, remember that sanitary facilities aren’t available here.
