“What happened here?” echoes in the minds of many standing before the Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven Stele. This stele marks a site of immense historical and cultural importance. It stands as a somber reminder of a community lost and a heritage destroyed.

The Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven was once a vibrant center of Jewish life. It was built in 1878 according to the plans of the Geestemünde architect Bernhard Scheller. The synagogue stood proudly at Schulstraße 5. It served the growing Jewish population of Bremerhaven.

The Jewish community in Bremerhaven had a rich history. In 1800, a small community formed in Lehe. By 1816, it consisted of ten families. The community grew. Immigrants arrived from all parts of Germany. They were drawn to the thriving port city.

The synagogue became the heart of Jewish life. It offered a place for worship, community gatherings, and religious education. The Synagogengemeinde Wesermünde, as the community was officially known, also owned a religious school and a cemetery near Spadener Straße.

But the vibrant community and its beloved synagogue faced a dark chapter. The rise of Nazism cast a long shadow over Bremerhaven. The first signs of trouble appeared in the early Weimar period. Antisemitic incidents increased. These were instigated by nationalist groups.

After the Nazis seized power in 1933, Jewish businesses were boycotted. Jewish citizens began to emigrate. The situation worsened over time. Anti-Jewish measures were intensified.

The culmination of this hate arrived on November 9, 1938. During the Kristallnacht pogrom, SA and NSDAP members organized violent attacks. Jewish shops were looted. Homes were ransacked. The Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven was set ablaze.

Witnesses say that arsonists danced in front of the burning synagogue. The fire completely destroyed the building. In 1939, the Jewish community was forced to pay for the removal of the synagogue’s remains. The property was then sold to the city.

In the days following Kristallnacht, almost all male members of the community were arrested. They were deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. A wave of emigration followed. By 1941, the remaining Jewish residents were forced into “Jew houses”. They were then deported to Minsk. Few survived.

Today, this stele stands as a memorial. It marks the spot where the Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven once stood. It is a place for reflection. The inscription reads: “On the property Schulstraße 5 stood the synagogue of the Jewish community. It was set on fire under the rule of the National Socialists on Nov. 9, 1938.”

The Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven Stele reminds us of the dangers of intolerance. It serves as a call to remember the victims of the Holocaust. The Stolpersteine, scattered throughout Bremerhaven, also commemorate individual victims of Nazi persecution.

Though the Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven is gone, its memory lives on. The stele ensures that the story of Bremerhaven’s Jewish community will never be forgotten. It invites us to remember, to learn, and to build a more tolerant future.

In 2000, a new Jewish community was founded in Bremerhaven. They use a former US Army church as their synagogue. This shows the resilience of the Jewish people. The community continues to rebuild Jewish life in Bremerhaven. The Alte Synagoge Bremerhaven Stele stands as a testament to the past. It also embodies hope for the future.
