High above the Elbe River, the Alte Schanze whispers tales of Napoleon’s ambition. Can you imagine him, the self-proclaimed emperor, standing right here in Dresden in 1813? The Alte Schanze wasn’t always a playground. It was part of Napoleon’s grand defensive strategy. He ordered the construction of a network of fortifications, a “Schanzenkranz” or “ring of redoubts,” around Dresden. The Alte Schanze, pointing towards another Napoleonic fort in the Dresden Heath, formed a crucial link in this chain. The Schanzenstrasse, the street running alongside the Alte Schanze, literally means “Redoubt Street.” It gained this name in 1859, a direct reference to the very fortification we’re standing before. Before the bombs of World War II rained down on Dresden, this very spot was home to the 7th and 14th Volksschule. These schools, bustling with life and learning, were tragically reduced to rubble. The only remnants are the stairways, leading not to classrooms, but to the “blue playground,” as the locals call it. Children now climb and play where students once learned and studied. This area, the Hecht district, is steeped in more recent history, too. In October 2020, the quiet Schanzenstrasse became a scene of protest. A group of young people occupied a vacant building at number 3, seeking to repurpose it for housing. Their occupation was short-lived, ending with a police eviction. Yet, it echoes the spirit of change that has always resonated through Dresden. The Alte Schanze stands as a silent witness to these layered stories. It’s a place where the echoes of Napoleonic battles mingle with the laughter of children and the whispers of recent protests. This, then, is more than just an old fortification. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Dresden, a city that has been shaped by conflict, rebuilt by resilience, and continues to evolve, always embracing the future while whispering tales of the past.
