Founded in 1512 the Alte Nikolaischule stands before you. This wasn’t just any school. It was Leipzig’s first civic school. Imagine the bustling scene. Children rushed through its doors. For centuries this building educated generations of Leipzigers.

The Alte Nikolaischule’s history stretches back further than its official founding. A private school Schola Nikolaitana existed near the Nikolaikirche. Its students known as Nikolaitaner were its legacy. In 1395 Pope Boniface IX authorized a city school near the church. The city council finally acted in 1498 establishing the school officially. Construction began in 1511. The existing building and a nearby bakery were demolished. On December 6 1512 the school opened its doors a significant moment in Leipzig’s history.

Throughout the years the Alte Nikolaischule expanded and adapted. Increased student numbers led to renovations in 1530. Even then only four classrooms served the boys. The custodian and his family occupied the entire first floor. The school embraced the Reformation in 1539. Sadly in 1551 a fire destroyed the building. It was rebuilt in 1568 later remodeled in the Renaissance style in 1596/97. By 1611 it was a six-grade Latin school. German instruction was added only in 1716. A remarkable fact Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz attended the Alte Nikolaischule from 1655 to 1661.

Richard Wagner also studied here. His music lessons took place in the school’s impressive assembly hall. This hall added in 1824-1827 was reconstructed in 1994. It now accommodates 100 people for events.

The Alte Nikolaischule served educational purposes until the 19th century. In 1872 the school moved. The old building then housed various establishments including a police station and exhibition spaces. In 1976 it was declared unsafe and closed.

Then came its rebirth. The Kulturstiftung Leipzig took ownership in 1990. Thanks to a generous donation from Frankfurt am Main and Saxon preservation funds it was meticulously restored. The Alte Nikolaischule reopened in 1994 winning an architectural award. Today it’s a cultural center a testament to Leipzig’s rich history. It houses the Kulturstiftung Leipzig and the University of Leipzig’s Antiquities Museum. A Richard Wagner Museum tells the story of the composer’s Leipzig years. The building itself a symbol of preservation and renewal stands as a monument to education and culture. The Alte Nikolaischule a living piece of Leipzig’s past continues to shape its present.
