Amidst the vibrant student life, stands the Alte Mensa in Dresden. It’s more than just a cafeteria. It is a living testament to the evolution of student life in Germany. The Alte Mensa proudly claims its title as the oldest student cafeteria in Germany. Its doors first opened on November 15, 1925. Initially, it accommodated up to 900 guests. The building has undergone several expansions throughout the years. This includes additions in the 1930s and further expansions in the 1950s. These expansions brought it to its current grandeur. The Alte Mensa also briefly served as a quarter for the Red Army after World War II. A major renovation took place between 2004 and 2007. During this period, temporary tent cafeterias were set up to feed the students. The renovated Alte Mensa reopened on January 15, 2007. Today, it boasts a seating capacity of 1,000 in its four dining halls. There’s also a cafeteria with 100 seats, and three outdoor terraces add another 250 seats. The central food distribution area, known as the “Brat²” (Bratquadrat), is located on the ground floor. Dishes are prepared in large kitchens in the basement and then transported to the serving counter via elevators. The Alte Mensa isn’t just a place for sustenance. It’s a hub of student activity and a piece of Dresden’s history. It has witnessed the changing tides of time, serving generations of students. The Alte Mensa continues to nourish both bodies and minds.
