Rows of buildings stand tall. This is Alte Heide in Munich. A residential park built between 1919 and 1928. It’s a unique place a testament to thoughtful urban planning. The Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft Alte Heide commissioned the project. Six industrial companies and a housing association joined forces. They wanted to address the city’s housing shortage. They sought to create smaller apartments for industrial workers. Each building is three stories high. They feature two to five rooms each. Most apartments had around 60 square meters. They included the usual kitchen bathroom and a small balcony.
A shared bathhouse was a clever feature. It offered both showers and tubs. Initially apartments had two rooms. After 1926 Fischer redesigned the floor plans. He added a fourth room a pantry and a bathroom. This reflected changing needs for larger living spaces. The post-war housing crisis led to a further adaptation. Two attic apartments were added to each building in 1949.
Alte Heide’s design is remarkable. Fischer arranged the buildings parallel to each other. They are perpendicular to the access roads. This ensured that each unit received sunlight and ventilation. This innovative approach avoided the disadvantages of traditional block development. Alte Heide is a pioneer of this construction style. The style became popular in the 1920s and again after World War II. Architectural styles blended together. Elements of Historicism and Art Nouveau can be seen. Gardens and small parks separate the buildings. It’s more than just a residential area. It’s a carefully planned community.
Alte Heide is more than just buildings. It is home to a school a villa and a former shop and administration building. The U-Bahn station Alte Heide is named after this community.
