Picture this. You stand before the Alte evangelische Kirche Bornheim a beautiful neo-Romanesque building. This isn’t just any church. It’s a piece of Bornheim’s history. It’s a testament to community and faith.

The Alte evangelische Kirche Bornheim was built in 1863. The Bonn municipal architect Paul Richard Thomann oversaw its construction. It opened its doors in 1866. This was possible thanks to the Jewish banking houses Schaafhausen and Oppenheim. They generously donated the land.

The church is made of red brick. Light-colored bands create a striking visual effect. The design is classicist. The exterior detailing is neo-Romanesque. The roof structure is uniquely open inside. The decorative painting inside dates back to the late 19th century. A square tower with a shingled dome roof stands at the west end. A large round-arched entrance is on the left side.

The Alte evangelische Kirche Bornheim underwent significant renovations in the early 2000s. A leaky roof and pest infestation caused major issues. In 2019 the facade restoration began. Interior renovations followed.

The church’s interior layout follows the Eisenacher Regulativ of 1861. The pulpit and baptismal font are on either side of the altar. The organ a chest organ from Stahlhuth in Aachen is on the west gallery. This organ replaced an older one from the 19th century. It was purchased used in 1988 from the Protestant church in Surth.

The Alte evangelische Kirche Bornheim is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of worship a symbol of Bornheim’s past. It stands as a reminder of the community’s resilience and faith. A place where history whispers and faith endures. This remarkable church stands proudly. It’s a testament to community and collaboration. It continues to serve the community even today. The Alte evangelische Kirche Bornheim is a true gem of Bornheim.
