Remember the name Alt-Travemünde. It is more than just a district. It is often equated with Travemünde itself. Alt-Travemünde sits where the Trave River meets the Baltic Sea. It is the western part of Travemünde.

Travemünde started as a fortress in the 12th century. Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, built it. The fortress guarded the mouth of the Trave. Danes later made it stronger. Travemünde became a town in 1317. In 1329, it became Lübeck’s property.

In Alt-Travemünde, find beaches along the Strandpromenade. There are also beaches on the Priwall’s Baltic Sea shore. The best time for swimming is July to August. The water is around 20 degrees Celsius then.

The sandy beach at Strandpromenade stretches 1.7 kilometers. Around 1700 beach chairs are available. Lifeguards from DLRG keep watch. They signal safety with flags. A yellow flag means swimming is dangerous. A red flag means swimming is forbidden.

Alt-Travemünde is easy to reach. The B 75 and A 226 connect it to the region. The A 226 joins the A 1 at Bad Schwartau. Trains run from Hamburg and Lübeck to Alt-Travemünde. The line has been electric since 2008. Trains arrive hourly.

There are three train stations in Alt-Travemünde. One is Lübeck-Travemünde Skandinavienkai. It is near the port. Another is Lübeck-Travemünde Hafen. It is close to the Stadtschule. The last one is Lübeck-Travemünde Strand. It is near the promenade.

Buses also connect Alt-Travemünde to the center. Alt-Travemünde has a population of 11,547. This was in December 2020. Other villages belong to Travemünde. They include Brodten, Teutendorf, and Ivendorf. Each has only 100 to 300 people.

Travemünde has been a seaside resort since 1802. The annual Travemünder Woche is a sailing race. The Sand World is an annual sand festival. Thomas Mann wrote about Travemünde in Buddenbrooks. He described it as a place of freedom and happiness.

Travemünde’s history is rich. It became part of Lübeck in 1329. The town suffered damage from storms. Traces of these storms are still visible. Today, Travemünde is a popular tourist spot. Alt-Travemünde is a key part of this attraction.
