Gazing at the Alt-katholische Christuskirche, have you ever considered its journey through time? This stunning church, one of the purest examples of its architectural style in Konstanz, stands as a testament to centuries of faith and artistry. The Alt-katholische Christuskirche wasn’t always alt-catholic. It began as a Jesuit church, meticulously constructed between 1604 and 1607. The design, a harmonious blend of Renaissance elements, is credited to lay brother Stephan Huber. Alongside the church, he also built the adjacent college, now home to government offices, and the gymnasium, which has been transformed into the Stadttheater. Consecrated by Bishop Jakob Fugger, the church was originally dedicated to Saint Conrad, a 10th-century bishop of Konstanz. Inside the Alt-katholische Christuskirche, remnants of its rich history linger. Statues of Mary and the Three Kings, crafted by the Dutch master Hans Morinck, grace the high altar. Fifteen rosary paintings, each bearing a donor’s coat of arms, adorn the nave’s pillars. The four paintings in the choir, depicting Jesuit saints, add another layer of historical significance. The church’s namesake, the grand crucifix, also dates back to the 17th century. The Alt-katholische Christuskirche underwent a significant transformation in 1682, led by Jesuit Heinrich Mayer, who also designed the Münster’s new vault. The elliptical barrel vault, adorned with intricate stucco ornaments, creates a unique atmosphere. Further renovations in the Rococo period brought about the current interior. The altars were rebuilt, and the pulpit, confessionals, pews, and iron gate were all crafted in the elegant Rococo style. The high altar’s tabernacle is a masterpiece, its door depicting the cross as a tree of life, intertwining the sacrifice of the cross with the promise of new life in the Eucharist. The Alt-katholische Christuskirche’s connection to the neighboring college and gymnasium is another fascinating aspect of its story. Two loggias once allowed access to services from the college’s first floor. A bridge connected the lower gallery to the gymnasium, facilitating movement within the Jesuit complex. These connections, however, were removed after 1773. In 1773, the Jesuit order was dissolved. The gymnasium became private property, its hall transformed into a theater. The church continued to serve as the gymnasium’s church, evidenced by inscriptions on the pews. Remarkably, the church remained largely untouched, preserved in the state of its prime. In 1904, the Catholic community of Old Catholics, formed in 1873, traded the Trinity Church for the former Jesuit church. The Alt-katholische Christuskirche, now a symbol of Old Catholic faith, stands as a beautiful blend of history, artistry, and spiritual significance.
