In 1859, a simple bluestone church rose amidst the burgeoning village of Alphington. This was no ordinary church; it was Alphington Uniting Church. This very structure bore witness to the growth of a community and the evolution of faith. Initially a Wesleyan chapel, it became a cornerstone for Methodists in the region, its reach extending as far as Eltham and Research. The echoes of those early sermons seem to linger in the very stones, don’t they? Picture Alphington in the late 19th century. The area buzzed with activity as new residents, drawn by the promise of affordable housing and easy access to the city, flocked to the area. While the old church continued to serve its purpose, a new one was built in 1916, a testament to the growing congregation. The original Alphington Uniting Church, however, didn’t fade into obscurity. It housed Sunday school classes and youth groups, its sturdy walls containing the laughter and energy of a new generation. Change, however, was afoot. In 1977, the Methodist Church embarked on a new chapter, merging to become the Uniting Church of Australia. Alphington Uniting Church embraced this change, and its story continued. Services eventually moved to St. Judes Anglican Church in 1985, marking another turning point for the beloved bluestone building. However, its story doesn’t end there. Recognizing its historical significance, the property received a Heritage Trust Listing, ensuring its legacy would endure. Today, Alphington Uniting Church, with its rich and layered past, serves as a powerful reminder of Alphington’s journey from a humble village to a thriving suburb, a silent sentinel reflecting the unwavering spirit of its community.
