Almirante Miguel Grau Seminario was born in Peru in 1834. He became an admiral and a national hero. Grau commanded the Peruvian Navy. He also commanded the warship Huáscar. He fought in several naval battles during the War of the Pacific.
Grau’s early career began at sea. At 19 he joined the Peruvian Navy. He quickly gained a strong professional reputation. By 1864 Grau was overseeing ship construction in Europe. This included the ironclad Huáscar. In 1868 he became commander of the Huáscar.
During the War of the Pacific Grau played a vital role. He disrupted Chilean supply lines. He damaged enemy ships. Grau’s stealth and surprise attacks became legendary. These actions delayed a Chilean invasion by six months. The government promoted him to rear admiral.
Grau was known as “El Caballero de los Mares” translated as The Gentleman of the Seas. At the Battle of Iquique Grau’s ship sank a Chilean corvette. He ordered the rescue of the surviving crew. Grau even sent condolences to the widow of the fallen commander. He returned the commander’s sword and personal items.
In another act of chivalry Grau approached an enemy ship. He politely asked the crew to abandon ship before attacking. These actions earned him respect from his enemies. They recognized his courage. They acknowledged his honorable behavior.
