In 1891, a sturdy scow schooner named Alma was born in a San Francisco shipyard near Hunters Point. The Alma, now a stately presence at San Francisco’s Hyde Street Pier, wasn’t always a museum piece. She was a workhorse, designed for the unique challenges of San Francisco Bay. Her flat bottom allowed her to navigate shallow creeks and sloughs, even resting on the bottom while loading and unloading cargo. The Alma, like other scow schooners, was built for strength. Her robust hull could withstand the rigors of the bay, carrying hay, lumber, and other goods. She was a vital part of the Bay Area’s commerce, connecting different parts of the region. The Alma plied the waters under sail until 1918. Then, her masts were removed, and she transitioned to a new life as a salt-carrying barge. Later, in 1926, an engine was installed, and she became an oyster dredging schooner, a role she filled until 1957. The Alma’s working life ended, but her story was far from over. In 1959, the State of California purchased the Alma. Restoration began in 1964, breathing new life into the aging vessel. The Alma’s historical significance was recognized with her inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. A few years later, in 1988, she received the prestigious designation of a National Historic Landmark. Now, the Alma rests at Hyde Street Pier, part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. She stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of Bay Area shipbuilding. She is a reminder of the vital role scow schooners played in shaping the region’s maritime history. When you visit the Alma, take a moment to imagine her sailing the bay, her sails full of wind. Think of the countless journeys she made, the goods she carried, and the people whose lives she touched. The Alma is more than just a ship; she is a living piece of San Francisco history.
