Founded in 1897 the Alliance Française de Chicago stands before you a testament to Franco-American friendship. It’s one of the oldest Alliance Française branches in the US. Imagine prominent Chicagoans like James Deering and William Rainey Harper the first president of the University of Chicago among its founding members.

The Alliance Française de Chicago wasn’t always here on Dearborn Avenue. It began its journey in the Fine Arts Building on South Michigan Avenue. Its early days were filled with language lessons lectures and a lending library brimming with French books. Le Cercle a literary salon provided a unique space to practice French conversation.

In the early 1900s the Alliance expanded its reach partnering with the Art Institute and the University of Chicago. It needed more room. As its popularity grew the Alliance moved to larger spaces. Finally in 1983 it found its current home. This was a row of historic townhouses previously slated for demolition.

The Ecole Boulle in Paris even renovated the building as part of its centenary celebration. The result is a charming blend of French architectural design and furnishings. Imported Paris cobblestones pave the parkway outside. The fourth-floor boardroom showcases the Boulle décor beautifully.

A gift from the French government in 1997 helped acquire the adjoining building at 54 West Chicago Avenue. This enabled further expansion. The main auditorium classrooms library and even a teaching kitchen were added. The Chez Kids Academy also became part of the complex. All these additions show the Alliance’s commitment to promoting French language and culture in Chicago.

Over the years the Alliance Française de Chicago hosted numerous renowned figures. Presidents ambassadors royalty and artists graced its premises. Literary giants like Simone de Beauvoir and Nobel laureate JMG Le Clézio lectured here. Couturiers such as Pierre Balmain and Hubert de Givenchy also visited. Performing artists like Edith Piaf Marcel Marceau and Audrey Hepburn entertained audiences. The Alliance’s commitment to French theatre is evident in its collaborations with the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre bringing performances of the Comédie Française to Chicago.

Beyond cultural events the Alliance played a vital role in wartime relief efforts. During World Wars I and II members rolled bandages and knitted sweaters. Some were even awarded the Légion d’Honneur for their contributions. The Alliance also offered free French lessons to service members heading to Europe.

Today the Alliance Française de Chicago continues its mission. It boasts nearly 2000 members and over 3500 annual enrollments. It remains a vibrant hub for French culture and language education in Chicago a testament to its enduring legacy. So step inside and experience this rich cultural history for yourself.
