Have you ever wondered about the stories held within the walls of a grand old house? Allendale in Grey Lynn Auckland is just such a place. Standing proudly at 50 Ponsonby Road this Italianate villa whispers tales of bygone eras.

Built in 1893 for George Allen a saddler Allendale wasn’t always a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 historic place. It began as a home. Later it transformed into a doctor’s surgery. Then it became a hostel for Māori women. It even served as a refuge for alcoholic men. For a time James Williamson founder of the New Zealand Insurance Co resided there. Its history is a colourful tapestry woven from the lives of many people.

Allendale’s architectural details are breathtaking. Notice the double-hung sash windows. Observe the pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The wide verandahs on both floors boast decorative valences and balustrades. The octagonal belvedere perched atop the house is a stunning feature. Imagine the views from there. The slate roof and corrugated iron verandah covers add to its charm.

Over the years Allendale has undergone modifications. Especially on the inside. In 2013 a significant annexe was added. The project was undertaken by Salmond Reed Architects. Their work earned three awards. The restoration beautifully blends old and new.

The Auckland Savings Bank Community Trust now Foundation North occupied Allendale. They undertook a major restoration and refurbishment. They raised the ceilings. They reinstated original spaces. They even redecorated the entire interior and exterior. Allendale’s transformation is a testament to the power of preservation.

Today Allendale stands as a symbol of Auckland’s rich history. Its story is not just one of brick and mortar. It is a story of people places and purpose. It is a living legacy. A testament to the resilience of a building that has witnessed so much change. It is a true treasure of Grey Lynn. A place to be cherished and explored.
