“My General” whispered the wind through the trees lining Allée Yvonne Beauvais. This quiet Parisian alley holds a secret. A secret of courage and faith. A secret whispered only to those who listen closely.

Allée Yvonne Beauvais is named for Mother Yvonne-Aimée Beauvais a remarkable Augustinian nun. She wasn’t just a woman of prayer. She was a woman of action. A woman of extraordinary love and extraordinary suffering. She lived a life dedicated to God and to others.

During World War II Mother Yvonne-Aimée risked her life to shelter Allied soldiers and French Resistance fighters. The convent hospital became a refuge. A place of healing and escape. She cleverly disguised some airmen as nuns. Their escape was her success. Her bravery was undeniable. General Charles de Gaulle awarded her the French Legion of Honor. This is no small feat. General Audibert chief of the Western Resistance witnessed her selfless acts. He called her “My General” recognizing her strength and courage. He mourned deeply upon her death writing “When someone with this clarity this power this grandeur disappears it seems that the sky is darkened for us.”

But Mother Yvonne-Aimée’s heroism extended beyond wartime acts. Years before the war three men attacked her in Boulogne-Billancourt. They beat and tortured her. One was a depraved priest she had tried to help. This priest later repented. He was converted through her compassion. This terrible incident didn’t diminish her spirit. She found strength in her faith and continued her work. She showed unbelievable forgiveness.

Mother Yvonne-Aimée dedicated herself to helping priests in moral distress or temptation. She bore their burdens. She offered comfort to troubled consciences. She brought joy and hope to those haunted by despair. She suffered deeply for priests. She was a true mystic. “I am all weakness he will be my strength I am not afraid of the cross he has presented me. I will suffer with all my heart for the intention you recommended to me for priests!” she once declared.

She planned a trip to South Africa in 1951. She wanted to visit nuns of her order. Tragically she died in February of a cerebral hemorrhage. Her life cut short at the age of 49. Allée Yvonne Beauvais serves as a lasting tribute. It is a quiet reminder of a woman who gave everything for her faith and her fellow man. A woman who truly deserved the title “My General”. Let us take a moment of silence to appreciate her sacrifice. Her story echoes through this very place even now.
