“Neus Català,” the name echoes with resilience. It speaks of a woman who defied fascism. Here, along this walkway, we honor her legacy. This is Allée Neus Català. It is a tribute to a remarkable life.

Allée Neus Català lies in Paris’s 11th and 20th arrondissements. This pedestrian walkway stretches 150 meters. It provides a peaceful route between Rue Alexandre-Dumas and Rue des Vignoles. The Allée Neus Català sits on the central reservation of Boulevard de Charonne.

The allée is named after Neus Català i Pallejà. She was a Catalan anti-fascist activist. She survived the Nazi concentration camp Ravensbrück. Neus was deeply committed to women’s rights. She fought against fascism until her death at 103.

Neus Català’s life was extraordinary. Born in Els Guiamets, Catalonia, in 1915, she became a symbol of resistance. During the Spanish Civil War, she cared for orphaned children. In 1939, she fled to France with 180 children. These children were known as the children of Negrín.

During the Nazi occupation, Neus joined the French Resistance with her husband. They were captured by the Gestapo in 1943. Neus was deported to Ravensbrück. Her husband died in Bergen-Belsen.

Neus survived Ravensbrück. She dedicated her life to preserving the memory of the Holocaust. She sought out testimonies from other women. These women had fought against Nazism. Neus gave voice to the dead and the survivors.

The Allée Neus Català was inaugurated in 2019. The inauguration marked the 80th anniversary of the Retirada. The Retirada was the Republican exile at the end of the Spanish Civil War.

Paris honored Neus Català posthumously. The city awarded her the Grand Vermeil medal. This is Paris’s highest honor. Her daughter, Margarita Català, accepted the award.

Allée Neus Català is flanked by tributes to other remarkable women. Allée Maria Doriath honors a Spanish communist. Maria was also a member of the Resistance. Allée Maya Surduts commemorates a feminist and anti-racist activist.

The location of Allée Neus Català is near Père Lachaise Cemetery. Many exiled Spanish Republicans are buried here. Like Neus, they fought against Nazi occupation. The allée is also near Rue Alexandre Dumas.

The City of Paris transformed this area into pedestrian-friendly ramblas. These ramblas are dedicated to feminist and militant ideals. They honor figures like Neus Català.

Neus Català’s legacy endures. She taught people to fight. She urged them to never bow down. Allée Neus Català is a reminder. It is a reminder of her unwavering spirit. It is a reminder of her fight for freedom. It is a reminder of her dedication to justice.
