Hidden beneath the majestic Sacré-Cœur Basilica lies a tranquil haven. This is the Square Louise Michel a green sanctuary dedicated to a remarkable woman. Louise Michel a name synonymous with the Paris Commune of 1871. Her life was a whirlwind of activism teaching and unwavering dedication to social justice.

This square wasn’t always a peaceful park. Its history is intertwined with the very geology of Montmartre. Beneath our feet lie the remnants of ancient gypsum quarries. These quarries were excavated for centuries supplying the stone for Parisian buildings. The land was once part of the Abbey of Montmartre’s domain. It was later sold as national property in 1794.

The area initially housed a small square called Square Saint-Pierre. Created in 1877 it eventually gave way to a larger design by Adolphe Alphand. Landslides and collapses in the area necessitated a more ambitious project. Alphand envisioned a sprawling green space. His vision involved winding paths and rocky outcrops. The work began in 1889 but was interrupted and continued by others until its completion decades later.

In 1927 the square was re-imagined. It was then christened Square Willette after Adolphe Willette a painter and illustrator. However the name wouldn’t last. In 2004 a decision by the Paris Council changed the square’s identity forever. In honour of the countless lives lost during and after the Paris Commune the council sought to rededicate the space. The square was renamed Square Louise Michel a fitting tribute to a woman whose life reflected both the beauty and the struggles of Montmartre.

The square itself features the monumental Fountain of Paul Gasq. Its neoclassical style and playful water features add to its charm. A smaller bronze fountain by Émile Derré called the Fountain of the Innocents features a cherubic baby. The inscription “Mieux vaut de ris que de larmes escrire” adds a touch of Rabelaisian wit. The Allée de l’Île-des-Pins commemorates the thousands of Communards exiled to the penal colony of New Caledonia. An Araucaria tree stands as a poignant reminder of their suffering.

The Square Louise Michel isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to Louise Michel’s spirit. A place of reflection a place of beauty and a place that echoes the vibrant history of Paris. It’s a place you’ll remember long after your visit.
