Jean Bécot, a name whispered with reverence, echoes along this very Allée. Who was this young man, and why is this serene path in Vitry-sur-Seine dedicated to his memory? Allée Jean Bécot isn’t just a walkway. It’s a living testament to the courage of ordinary citizens during extraordinary times. Jean, born in Vitry-sur-Seine in 1928, was a seemingly ordinary apprentice carpenter working for the SNCF. He lived with his parents on Boulevard Lamouroux, a life far removed from the grand narratives of history. Yet, destiny had a different path laid out for him. When the tremors of World War II reached Vitry-sur-Seine, Jean didn’t stand idly by. He joined the French Forces of the Interior (FFI), the resistance movement against the Nazi occupation. In August 1944, as the liberation of Paris drew near, the SNCF workshops in Vitry-sur-Seine erupted in a strike. Barricades arose, the town hall was reclaimed, and the spirit of defiance filled the air. Jean, along with five other young railway workers from the Jean Bosc group, embarked on a perilous mission. Their task: to deliver crucial supplies. Near the Mazagran bridge, their path was tragically cut short by a German armored car. Outgunned and captured, Jean and his comrades, Charles Heller, Marcel Boudou, Jean Brault, Bernard Lallemand, and Serge Voyer, were executed on the spot. Their bodies were heartlessly discarded in a nearby farmyard. The brutality of their deaths shocked the community. The Mazagran bridge, a silent witness to their sacrifice, was renamed “Pont des Fusillés” (Bridge of the Executed) to honor their memory. A plaque stands at the corner of Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud and Avenue du Groupe Manouchian, a permanent reminder of their bravery. Jean Bécot, a young man who answered the call of duty, became a symbol of resistance and sacrifice. Allée Jean Bécot, more than just a street, stands as a testament to his spirit and the countless unsung heroes who fought for freedom.
