Born in Paris General Camille Alphonse Trezel’s name echoes through history. This very alley Allée du Général Trezel pays tribute to him. He wasn’t just any general. He was a key figure in the French conquest of Algeria a complex and often brutal campaign.

General Trezel’s military career spanned decades. He served under Napoleon. He fought in numerous campaigns across Europe. His bravery was undeniable. He even lost his left eye during the Battle of Ligny in 1815 a testament to his courage.

His promotion to brigadier general after Ligny was short-lived. The restored Bourbon monarchy swiftly reversed it. This didn’t deter him. Trezel continued to rise through the ranks.

He found himself in Algeria in 1831. This land was fiercely resisting French rule. Trezel participated in the expedition to conquer Bougie a significant port city. He was wounded taking it. He later commanded the Oran division. His time in Algeria wasn’t all victories. The Battle of Macta in 1835 saw him suffer a disastrous defeat against Abd el-Kader a significant Algerian leader.

Despite Macta Trezel’s career continued its upward trajectory. He played a crucial role in the expeditions against Constantine another important Algerian city. He was seriously injured in the first attempt. He later commanded a brigade during the successful second expedition.

He attained the rank of lieutenant general. He then became the director of personnel at the Ministry of War. He rose to become Minister of War himself during the July Monarchy. He held this powerful position for a time. He was later appointed military governor to the young Counts of Paris and Eu. This marked the end of his long and influential military career.
