Hidden amidst the bustling Parisian streets lies the alluring Cité de Trévèse. This enchanting enclave holds a captivating story. It’s a haven of peace a secret garden in the heart of the city’s vibrant ninth arrondissement.

The Cité de Trévèse wasn’t always a public space. Originally a private gated community it was built in 1838. The architect Édouard Moll designed the buildings in an eclectic Italianate style. It was a haven for the wealthy. Shops and workshops were forbidden. Two guardians maintained the grounds paid for by the property syndicate.

Its name is a tribute to Marshal Édouard Mortier. He was the Duke of Treviso. Treviso is a city in Italy’s Veneto region. The Cité de Trévèse is near the Rue de Trévèse. This explains its namesake. The small square features a central garden. A charming fountain is its centerpiece.

During World War I a bomb exploded at number 22. This incident marked a turning point in the Cité’s history. The Cité remained closed to traffic until the 1950s. Two gates controlled access. In 1983 it finally opened to the public.

Today the Cité de Trévèse remains a hidden gem. It’s a testament to Parisian history and architecture. A quiet retreat in a busy city it whispers tales of the past.
