Wolves in Paris. Can you believe it? Right here in the 12th arrondissement we stand near the Rue de la Brèche-aux-Loups. Its name the Breach of the Wolves hints at a chilling past.

The Rue de la Brèche-aux-Loups a street steeped in history stretches before us. It’s much more than just a Parisian street. This ancient path dates back to the 13th century. Imagine the medieval world a time of harsh winters and unforgiving landscapes.

During those frigid winters wolves driven by hunger ventured close to the city. They even dared to approach the Chatelet searching for food. The Rue de la Brèche-aux-Loups was a place where the wild met the urban. It was a dangerous breach in the city walls a point where wolves could easily enter. This explains the street’s chilling name.

The path’s early form is recorded on the 1730 Roussel map. It was a winding lane a ruelle. It connected the Chemin des Marais to Rue de la Lancette. The lane is shown as a narrow tortuous pathway. This wasn’t a wide boulevard. Instead it was a narrow lane easily traversed by hungry wolves.

In 1845 the path became a street. It formally received its current name Rue de la Brèche-aux-Loups. It became a part of the Parisian street network a formal part of the city’s infrastructure. The wolf connection remained part of the name. This is a name that’s stood the test of time. The wolves may be gone but their legacy lingers.

Today the street is much safer. The threat of wolves is long past. However even today the street retains its character. This is visible in its name and its history. It is a quiet reminder of a time when the city was less secure. A time when the wild was never far away. The Rue de la Brèche-aux-Loups stands as a silent testament to this wild history a constant echo of the wolves of the past.
