Hidden within Marseille’s 9th arrondissement lies the Allée de la Fontaine Veyre. It’s more than just a street. It’s a gateway to a captivating legend. The Allée de la Fontaine Veyre leads to a hidden oasis known as the Fontaine de Voire, tucked away in the Vallon de la Jarre. Legend says that the waters of this ancient spring possess mystical qualities. Locals whisper that a sip can grant good fortune or even reveal glimpses of the future.

The Allée de la Fontaine Veyre is accessible by bus 23. Get off at the La Cayolle stop, a mere two-minute walk from your destination. From the Allée de la Fontaine Veyre, the adventure begins. Fifty meters past the bus stop, at the roundabout de la Jarre, take Boulevard Pierotti. This road leads you to the start of the trail. Follow the red-marked DFCI CQ 101 path. It winds through the wooded Vallon de la Jarre. The path gently ascends, leading you past a barrier and towards the mythical Fontaine de Voire. Nestled within a small baume, the spring is a welcome sight. Its waters trickle down, forming small gorges that continue further into the wilderness.

From the Fontaine de Voire, a challenging yet rewarding hike awaits. The Allée de la Fontaine Veyre acts as the starting point for this exploration. It sets the stage for the beautiful scenery that awaits those who undertake the climb. The trail ascends a rocky escarpment, winding southwards and offering breathtaking views. This demanding path will test your resolve. But the panoramic vista from the plateau of l’Homme Mort makes it all worthwhile. The entire expanse of the Rade de Marseille and its islands unfurls before you. The massif of Marseilleveyre dominates the horizon.

From the Allée de la Fontaine Veyre, the path to the summit continues. The trail, marked in blue, will lead you across the plateau overlooking Malvallon. Then to the western peak of l’Homme Mort, reaching an altitude of 374 meters. Descending from this peak requires caution. The terrain becomes rocky and steep. But the trail eventually leads to Pas de la Selle. From here, you descend via a series of switchbacks. The path guides you through the Bois de la Selle back towards the familiar clearing. Finally, retrace your steps along the Allée de la Fontaine Veyre. You return to the bus stop, carrying the memories of a magical journey.
