Did you know Allée Charles de Foucauld in Noisy-le-Grand is more than just an alley? It is a place named after a man of faith and adventure. Let’s walk this path together. I will tell you his story.

Allée Charles de Foucauld is named after Charles de Foucauld. He was born in Strasbourg in 1858. Losing his parents at a young age, his grandparents raised him. Though raised Catholic, he lost his faith as a teen. He became interested in pagan and atheist thinkers.

Later in life, Charles reclaimed his faith. He became a soldier and explorer. He dedicated his life to Christian study and prayer in the Sahara. Charles lived among the Tuareg people in the Algerian desert. He wanted to bring the Gospel to Muslim lands.

Charles’s journey back to faith involved key figures. His cousin Marie de Bondy helped him. Father Henri Huvelin, a Parisian curate, guided him. Living in Nazareth and with Trappists further shaped his path. He was ordained in 1901.

Charles de Foucauld was also a scholar. He translated the Gospel into the Tuareg language. He created the first bilingual Tuareg-French dictionary. He also documented thousands of lines of Tuareg poetry. His research still holds scientific value today.

Charles’s missionary work was his life. “Loving God, loving people is my whole life” he said. “May it always be my whole life. This is what I hope for.” He fought against slavery. He did this in Beni Abbes near the Moroccan border.

Sadly, Charles’s life was cut short. On December 1 1916 he was assassinated. Armed tribal groups connected to the Senussi Bedouins killed him. They attacked his hermitage in Tamanrasset Algeria.

Even in death, his influence grew. Dominican theologian Yves Congar remembered him. He saw him as a beacon of light. This was along with St. Thérèse of Lisieux.

A miracle is attributed to Charles’s intercession. In 2016 a French carpenter named Charle fell 53 feet. He impaled himself on a bench leg. Prayers for Charles’s intercession were offered. The carpenter survived. He was walking six days later.

Charles de Foucauld was beatified in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Francis canonized him in 2022. His feast day is December 1.

This Allée Charles de Foucauld is a reminder. It honors a man who lived his faith fully. He explored both the world and his soul. Take a moment to reflect on his dedication. Consider his impact as you walk this path.
