Imagine you are strolling through the heart of Paris, surrounded by the charm of the city. As you navigate the streets, you discover a hidden gem – a small lane called Allée Boileau. This unassuming pathway is a quiet oasis within the bustling 16th arrondissement. Allée Boileau was once part of the gardens surrounding the home of Nicolas Boileau, a celebrated 17th-century French poet. To this day, a plaque marks the spot where Boileau’s house once stood. In 1838, a printer and lithographer named Joseph Lemercier purchased the southern portion of the garden, envisioning a secluded haven for Parisian families. He commissioned the architect Théodore Charpentier to design a quaint “hameau,” a village-like enclave. The result was Allée Boileau, a series of 33 narrow plots, connected by picturesque circular intersections. The strict regulations ensured that the area remained exclusively residential, with businesses and bustling taverns prohibited. The beauty of Allée Boileau attracted wealthy Parisians, who appreciated its peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. Sculptures by renowned artists, like Carpeaux and Lenoir, dotted the garden, lending an air of artistic elegance. In 1970, Allée Boileau was designated a protected historical site. Today, Allée Boileau continues to be a haven for those seeking a tranquil retreat from the city’s frenetic pace. The entrance is guarded by a gate, and only residents are permitted to pass. Look around you, and you’ll see beautiful, centuries-old homes, each one brimming with history and charm. Step off the beaten path, and you’ll be transported back in time to a Paris of cobblestones and quiet gardens – a world where poetic inspiration still lingers.
