“A chair for healing animals?” István inquired, adjusting his glasses. “In a medical school?” Right here at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, or UVMB as it’s often called, the seeds of veterinary science in Hungary were sown. In 1787, within the hallowed halls of the Faculty of Medicine in Pest, a “Chair for Animal Healing” was established. This marked a pivotal moment, not just for animal care, but for the future of UVMB. This chair aimed to equip aspiring doctors with a fundamental understanding of animal ailments. This was a time when general practitioners often treated both humans and animals. The University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest wasn’t always an independent entity. It began as an offshoot of human medicine, a testament to the interconnectedness of life. As the 19th century unfolded, Hungary’s vast plains saw a boom in horse and cattle breeding. This surge in livestock necessitated a more specialized approach to animal care. The “Chair for Animal Healing” outgrew its medical school origins and in 1851, it transformed into the independent “Royal Institute of Veterinary Medicine.” This marked a significant step towards the establishment of UVMB as we know it today. The Royal Institute, the precursor to the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, further solidified its status in 1899, becoming the “Royal College of Veterinary Medicine.” This prestigious institution gained the right to award the coveted D.V.M. (Doctor Veterinariae Medicinae) diploma. Its reputation soared, both nationally and internationally, in the first half of the 20th century. The evolution continued, and in 1960, the institution achieved university status, becoming the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest. Today, the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest stands as a testament to over two centuries of dedication to veterinary science. It’s a hub for aspiring veterinarians from around the globe, offering programs in English, German, and Hungarian. The university has been accredited by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), a recognition of its commitment to excellence. The campus is a bustling center of learning, housing numerous departments and clinics covering various aspects of animal health and welfare. From the Department of Exotic Animal and Wildlife Medicine to the Center for Animal Welfare, the university’s diverse range of disciplines reflects its comprehensive approach to veterinary science. The University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the enduring legacy of those who pioneered veterinary education in Hungary, a legacy that continues to shape the future of animal care.
