Once upon a time, the area around Alibey Creek thrived. Market gardens and flower fields stretched along its banks. Alibeyköy offered a peaceful escape.
However, the mid-20th century brought industrial development. Factories sprang up. Major roads cut through the landscape. The creek suffered. Pollution increased. The water quality declined. The ecosystem suffered.
A 2021 study assessed the pollution levels. Researchers examined phytoplankton distribution and heavy metal concentrations. They took samples from the Alibeyköy Dam Lake. They also sampled six influent streams. These streams included Cebeci, Pirincci, Sidan, Bolluca, Gülgen and Kocaman.
The study identified 36 taxa of phytoplankton. Diatoms were the most abundant. The presence of mesotrophic and eutrophic species indicated a problem. The lake was nearing eutrophic conditions. High concentrations of heavy metals and nutrients confirmed this.
Microcystis aeruginosa dominated in Alibeyköy Dam and Sidan Creek. Cyclotella ocellata thrived in Cebeci and Gülgen Creeks. Scenedesmus sp. was common in Pirincci Creek. Navicula cryptocephala prevailed in Bolluca Creek. Sphaerocystis planctonica dominated in Kocaman Creek.
Alibey Dam was built between 1975 and 1983. This earthfill dam impounds the Alibey Creek. It has a height of 30 meters. Its total capacity is 66.80 hm3. The surface area stretches 4.66 km2.
Today, efforts are underway to rehabilitate Alibey Creek. Many factories have closed or cleaned up. People can now sit by the water. The area attracts conservative Muslim families.
