What happened in these dark times? Why did this man have to die? Standing before the Alfred-Delp-Denkmal, we are faced with such questions. The Alfred-Delp-Denkmal is more than just a monument. It is a stark reminder of the courage and conviction of Father Alfred Delp, a Jesuit priest who dared to resist the Nazi regime during World War II. Born in 1907, Delp’s early life was shaped by the turmoil of post-war Germany. He witnessed firsthand the rise of extremist ideologies like Nazism, which sought to replace God with the state and ruthlessly persecuted those deemed different or unworthy. Despite the risks involved, Delp used his position as a priest to speak out against the Nazi regime. He condemned their euthanasia program, recognizing the inherent dignity of all human life. Delp joined the Kreisau Circle, a secret society of intellectuals who dared to envision a different future for Germany, a future grounded in Christian principles. Their plans were shattered when a plot to assassinate Hitler failed. Delp was arrested, falsely accused, and subjected to a sham trial. Even in prison, he clung to his faith, penning powerful meditations on hope and the coming of Christ. On February 2nd, 1945, Alfred Delp was executed. He was just 37 years old. His ashes were scattered, in an attempt to erase his memory. The Alfred-Delp-Denkmal stands in defiance of that attempt. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, a single voice can make a difference. It challenges us to live lives of courage and conviction, to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult.
