Built in 1930 the Alfred-Damm-Heim stands proudly. It’s a testament to community spirit. The Alfred-Damm-Heim wasn’t just built it was dreamed. Dreamed by the members of the United Turners and Singers of Wurgwitz. A group who envisioned a space for sport and celebration. They even sold shares to raise the necessary 37000 Reichsmark. The local council contributed too adding another 12000 Reichsmark. The Alfred-Damm-Heim wasn’t just a building. It was a shared ambition realized.
Imagine the excitement on July 1 1930. The grand opening of the Turnhalle Wurgwitz. A space for gymnastics and events. The Alfred-Damm-Heim boasted a large hall with a stage. Separate rooms housed changing facilities bathrooms and a heating system. There was even an inn. A home for the caretaker occupied the top floor.
The Alfred-Damm-Heim’s story takes a turn. With the rise of the Nazis. The club was forbidden from using their building. Their ownership was seized in 1935. After World War II a new club was formed. The Culture and Sports Community of Wurgwitz. They reclaimed the hall. In 1953 it was officially renamed the Alfred-Damm-Heim. Honoring Alfred Damm one of the original driving forces behind its creation.
For years the Alfred-Damm-Heim thrived. It hosted countless sporting and cultural events. Annual carnival celebrations were a highlight. After reunification the Culture and Sports Association of Wurgwitz bought the building from the city of Freital. Sadly the Alfred-Damm-Heim fell into disrepair. It was technically outdated.
Then in 2009 something amazing happened. The renovation of the Alfred-Damm-Heim began. This included an extension for the inn and upgraded sanitary facilities. Today the Alfred-Damm-Heim stands as a revitalized community hub. A beacon of history resilience and the enduring power of collective dreams. It stands as a symbol of its community a symbol of perseverance. A building that reflects the spirit of its people.
