Picture the sun setting over Alfornelos. Its golden rays paint the hillside homes in warm hues. Alfornelos wasn’t always the vibrant suburb it is today. Its story begins surprisingly with the Arabic word Al-Forner meaning “baker”. Imagine the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the ancient fields. This name hints at Alfornelos’s humble origins. It likely started as a small settlement in the early 19th century. It was then known as Casal de Alfornel. It grew from farms and fields into a place where people built homes.

Alfornelos’s growth accelerated significantly in the 1980s and 1990s. Apartment buildings nine ten and twelve stories high sprouted up. Older four and five-story buildings remain interspersed. Many homes were built without permits. Some even faced legal challenges. Despite this Alfornelos’s commercial heart thrived. It boasts shops cafes and a large shopping center. The Centro Social Parroquial and its church stand proudly in the center.

Alfornelos officially became a parish in 1997. This was a significant moment for the community. It gained autonomy and a distinct identity. Its status as a parish however was short-lived. In 2013 Alfornelos became part of Encosta do Sol. This was due to a Portuguese administrative reorganization. The Alfornelos metro station opened in 2004. It stands as a symbol of progress and connection to the greater Lisbon area. Architect Alberto Barradas designed the station. Artist Ana Vidigal contributed the artistic elements.

Despite its brief existence as an independent parish Alfornelos’s legacy endures. It remains a vital part of Amadora’s history. The area’s unique blend of old and new buildings reflects its evolution. Its bustling commercial streets and vibrant community are a testament to its resilient spirit. The story of Alfornelos is a tale of transformation. It is a story of a community that overcame challenges and continues to grow. As you leave Alfornelos remember its rich history. Remember the bakers of the past and the families who call it home today.
