Did he know, as he walked across Vesterbro Torv on that fateful day in 1943, that his life was about to change irrevocably? This, my friends, is the Alf Tolboe Jensen Stone. It stands in silent testament to a young man who dared to resist the darkness that had fallen upon his homeland, Denmark, during World War II. Alf Tolboe Jensen was no stranger to courage. Born in 1918, he had already served his country as a Cornet in the Danish military. But when the Nazis invaded, he chose a different path, a perilous path of resistance. He joined a sabotage group, their targets the very infrastructure that fueled the German war machine. Alf, imagine this, became a courier, his backpack laden with explosives, his destination various cities across Jutland. His bravery, however, came at a heavy price. Betrayed by an informant, Alf was captured by the Gestapo right here on Vesterbro Torv. Imprisoned, tried, and sentenced to death, he would spend his last Christmas in a cold cell. On December 29, 1943, at the tender age of 25, Alf Tolboe Jensen was executed at Vester Allés Kaserne. His body, like those of so many others who dared to defy tyranny, was discarded, only to be recovered and laid to rest with honour after the war. This stone, a solemn reminder of his sacrifice, urges us to remember Alf Tolboe Jensen, the young man from Brabrand, who gave his life for the freedom we enjoy today.
