Wow. Look at Alexandra Gardens. Imagine this space a swamp. Before 1901 this area was used for timber cutting cattle grazing and brickmaking. Flooding was a constant problem. Then a new Yarra River channel was dug. The mud and debris filled the swampy areas. It raised the riverbank. Alexandra Gardens was born.

The gardens opened in 1901. They were named to honor Alexandra of Denmark. Her reign as Queen Consort began that year. The gardens are part of the larger Domain Parklands. This includes the Royal Botanic Gardens and Kings Domain. They stretch along the Yarra River.

Carlo Catani designed the gardens. He was the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department. He deserves immense credit for transforming a wasteland into this beauty. But he wasn’t alone. George Cooper the head curator also played a crucial role. His dedication ensured the gardens’ vibrant displays. This is a great example of collaborative landscape design.

Alexandra Gardens has a rich history. It’s more than just a pretty place. The Henley-on-Yarra regatta was held here. For decades Melburnians flocked to watch rowers compete. Attendance peaked at 300000 in 1925. The event is smaller now but still runs annually.

Notice the boathouses along the Yarra River. Rowing clubs are based here. Even the Oarsome Foursome trained on this very river. The gardens also have a unique star-shaped garden bed. It represents the Federation of Australia. It’s a thoughtful tribute.

Today Alexandra Gardens is a popular spot. People come for picnics and celebrations. The riverfront barbecues are perfect for family outings. Office Christmas parties are a popular choice. Even the Moomba celebrations draw crowds. Bicycles are available for hire. You can explore the Capital City Trail. The Around the Bay in a Day cycling event even finishes here. A skate park was added in 2001.

Alexandra Gardens is a beautiful place to relax and reflect. It is a treasure. It’s a testament to the vision and hard work of those who created it. It’s a place where history nature and community meet. Enjoy this iconic Melbourne space.
