Ever wondered how a school could carry the name of one of history’s greatest minds? I’m talking about the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium. Let me tell you its story.
The Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium is not just any school. It’s a place where young minds grow. It is located in the Harlaching area of Munich. It has a rich history linked to Albert Einstein himself.
The school’s roots go back to 1864. It began as the Munich Realgymnasium. This was Bavaria’s first school of its type. Over time it expanded. In 1905, some classes moved to Alexandrastrasse. They found space in the Royal Luitpold-Kreisrealschule. This branch moved several times. Finally in 1913 it settled in the former “Krüppelheim” on Klenzestrasse.
In 1918, this branch became independent. It merged with the Royal Luitpold Gymnasium. The new school was called Neues Realgymnasium. Interestingly Albert Einstein attended the Luitpold Gymnasium. He studied there from 1888 to 1894.
For a while the Neues Realgymnasium had two locations. One was on Klenzestrasse and the other on Müllerstrasse. In 1921, the school moved entirely to Müllerstrasse. In 1938, it was renamed Oberschule für Jungen. This means high school for boys.
World War II brought destruction. Air raids in 1944 damaged the school building. In 1952, the school moved to Eduard-Schmid-Strasse. A new building began in Harlaching in 1959. The school officially opened two years later. Some classrooms remained on Eduard-Schmid-Strasse until 1965.
A significant moment came in 1965. The Kultusministerium honored Albert Einstein. It gave the school his name. This recognized him as a former student and Nobel Prize winner. So it became the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium.
Today the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium offers both language and science programs. In 2023/24, 856 students attend. They are taught by 64 teachers. The school offers bilingual education and open all-day care.
The school supports various projects. One is SchuPa Kenia e.V. This helps schools in Kenya. Students and teachers founded the group in 2000. By 2019 it had over 350 members.
The Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium has exchange programs. These connect it to schools in other countries. These countries include France Spain Great Britain the USA and China.
The Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium achieved media reference school status in 2015. It became known for its work in media education.
