“Closed to the public.” That’s the sign greeting visitors to Albany Scenic Reserve right now. But let’s step past the sign in our minds. I am going to tell you a story about this special place. Albany Scenic Reserve is a 13-hectare reserve. It protects a unique ecosystem.

This is one of the largest remaining examples of mānuka-dominated gumland in Auckland. Gumlands were once widespread. Now they are critically endangered. Frequent fires altered many gumlands. Urban development has also had an impact. Weed invasion is an ongoing issue.

Gumlands develop on soils altered by kauri leaf litter. These soils become waterlogged during heavy rain. They also have low fertility. Only native plants adapted to these conditions can thrive here. The gumland vegetation grows on an elevated plateau-like ridgeline. This area has a history of burning.

Albany Scenic Reserve supports a diverse range of native plants. Mānuka thrives here. You’ll also find tangle fern. Schoenus tendo is another common plant. Look for Gahnia xanthocarpa. Several native orchids also grow in this reserve. Kauri, podocarp, and broadleaved forests surround the gumland. Kānuka scrub and forest are also present.

This gumland habitat supports native animals. Keep an eye out for lizards. The reserve forms part of a large ecological corridor. This corridor extends from the upper Waitematā Harbour. It stretches to the coast at Okura.

Weeds pose a significant threat to Albany Scenic Reserve. Hakea is a common weed here. Pines also invade the area. Spanish heath is another problem species. These weeds thrive in nutrient-poor, waterlogged conditions.

Unfortunately, kauri dieback badly affects the kauri forest. This soil-borne pathogen kills kauri trees of all ages. To prevent the spread of this disease, the reserve is currently closed to the public. This closure protects the remaining kauri.

Let’s imagine Albany Scenic Reserve teeming with life. Picture the mānuka in full bloom. Imagine the tangle fern carpeting the ground. See the lizards basking in the sun. Envision the kauri trees standing tall. Even though we can’t physically enter today, we can appreciate its significance. It is a haven for native plants and animals. It protects a critically endangered ecosystem. Albany Scenic Reserve is a reminder of the importance of conservation.
