Can you imagine a world without stereo sound? Right here, on the wall of 37 The Ridings in Ealing, is the Alan Blumlein Blue plaque. It commemorates the life and work of a man who not only gave us stereo but also made groundbreaking contributions to television and radar. Alan Dower Blumlein, born in 1903, was a true genius. By the age of seven, he was already billing himself as an “Electrical Engineer”. His career, filled with a remarkable 128 patents, began in telecommunications. He even designed the first weighting networks used to shape the frequency response of audio signals. But it was at EMI, starting in 1931, where his most famous invention came to life. Blumlein, frustrated by the unrealistic sound of early talkies, devised a way to make sound follow the actor on screen: stereophonic sound. His 1931 patent covered everything from microphone techniques and circuitry to cutting systems for stereo records. Just imagine, in 1934, he recorded Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony in stereo at the legendary Abbey Road Studios! Sadly, Blumlein’s brilliant life was cut short in 1942. He died during a test flight of an airborne radar system he was instrumental in developing. This system, the H2S radar, helped shorten World War II. So, the next time you listen to your favorite music in stereo, remember Alan Dower Blumlein, the man whose legacy continues to fill our world with immersive sound.
