Al Saydeh Church

How many churches do you think bear the name “Al Saydeh” in Lebanon? Al Saydeh Church, right here in Sin el Fil, is just one of them. Al Saydeh means “Our Lady.” This tells us about the widespread reverence for the Virgin Mary across Lebanon. Al Saydeh Church is a Maronite church. It falls under the Maronite Diocese of Beirut. The church is located on Al Saydeh Street, a fitting address. Interestingly, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated by both Christians and Muslims in Lebanon. It’s a significant event starting with a period of fasting and mourning from August 1st to the eve of August 14th. Then, celebrations erupt across the country for two weeks. While Western Christians believe in Mary’s bodily ascension to heaven, Eastern Christians believe she rose in spirit. Her body, they believe, remains buried in Jerusalem.
