Have you heard about the spiritual anchor of Batu Ferringhi? This is the Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque. It stands as a testament to faith amidst the vibrant activities of this Penang village.
Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque is a newly built mosque for the Muslim community. It is located in Batu Ferringhi village. You will find it just across the road from Yahong Art Gallery.
Once, Batu Ferringhi was a traditional Malay fishing village. Beach development gradually changed the rural way of life. Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque now provides a spiritual focus. It helps the community stay connected to their roots amidst modern changes.
Earlier this month, Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque faced an unexpected challenge. An incident occurred involving a woman who entered the men’s prayer area. Disrespectful comments were allegedly made. The woman likened the voices of the muezzin and imam to “barking dogs” and “discordant devils”.
The incident at Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque quickly went viral on social media. This prompted Masjid Jamek Ar-Rahman committee chairperson Ismail Din to take action. He lodged a police report to address the situation.
Ismail Din called for calm. He assured the public that the police were handling the matter. The woman’s relatives also contacted the mosque to address the issue.
According to Ismail, the woman had previously complained about the azan disturbing her sleep. In response, the mosque management adjusted the loudspeakers. They ensured that the neighborhood would not be disturbed.
The woman’s sister reached out to Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque. She explained that her sister has been dealing with mental health issues. These issues arose after returning from abroad.
Ismail Din emphasized that the mosque is trying to resolve the situation through dialogue. They plan to hold a meeting for her to apologize and reconcile. The authorities are handling the matter. Northeast police chief ACP Razlam Ab Hamid confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
So, as we stand here, let’s appreciate Al-Rahman Jamek Mosque. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith. It is a place of community. It stands strong even when facing unexpected challenges.
