Beneath the Fukuoka sky, a unique landmark stands: Al Noor Islamic Center. A young boy once asked his father, “Why is that building so different?” His father replied, “That, my son, is a place of peace, a mosque, Al Noor Islamic Center.” Al Noor Islamic Center, also known as Fukuoka Masjid, isn’t just a building. It is the first mosque on the island of Kyushu, opened in 2009. This mosque serves as a spiritual home for the nearly 1,000 Muslims in Fukuoka Prefecture. Al Noor Islamic Center also welcomes those curious about Islam. The mosque’s architecture is striking. Inside, you’ll find men’s prayer rooms on the first floor and women’s prayer rooms on the second. A multipurpose hall, library, and kitchen occupy the basement. Classrooms and another kitchen are located on the third floor. Daily and Friday prayers are held regularly at Al Noor Islamic Center, as well as Eid prayers. The mosque also offers Arabic classes, cooking classes, and seminars on Islam. After the earthquakes in 2011 and 2016, Al Noor Islamic Center actively participated in relief efforts, extending its compassion beyond its walls. The mosque even issues halal certifications, aiding the Muslim community in navigating dietary practices in Japan. This multifaceted role exemplifies the spirit of Al Noor Islamic Center, a place of worship, learning, and community support. It is a testament to the growing presence of Islam in Japan and a symbol of interfaith understanding.
