The Al-Khashokji Mosque was donated by the Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi. Its inauguration in 1981 was a significant event. The late Prime Minister Saeb Salam graced the occasion with his presence. He had diligently supervised all stages of its construction.
Saeb Salam’s connection to the mosque goes beyond its construction. After his death, he was buried in a special burial site in the mosque’s garden. This act connects his legacy to this sacred place. It intertwines political leadership with religious devotion.
Assem Salam shaped this meaningful modern contribution to mosque architecture from 1974-1982. The design divides into two distinct parts. First, there’s an enclosed prayer space. It’s dressed in sandstone and framed by concrete columns. A complex concrete shell crowns the structure. This shell is a modern take on the traditional dome, formed by folded planes.
Next to it is an outdoor space. Arched galleries surround it. A concrete slab supported by diagonal beams covers the area. This suggests an arabesque motif. Surprisingly, the arches stand perpendicular to the main elevation. They face the Pine Forest. Instead of directly participating in the façade, they present a simple post profile to the street.
