Established in 1984 STAI Al Hikmah Jakarta began as a humble initiative. It stemmed from a Kuliah Kerja Nyata KKN project. This involved students from IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The project’s success sparked a vision. This vision was to establish an Islamic higher education institution. The institution would operate under the Al Mahbubiyah education umbrella Yasma.

After thorough feasibility studies and consultations Al Hikmah’s founding was secured. Key figures such as Prof Dr Harun Nasution KH Abdurahman Wahid and Dr H Fahmi D Saepudin were involved. They lent their expertise and support to this new venture. The institution opened its doors on September 18 1984. Twenty students enrolled in the first class.

The driving force behind Al Hikmah was a desire to improve Islamic education. Jakarta Selatan lacked sufficient Islamic higher education institutions. Many aspiring Muslim students were unable to pursue higher learning. Al Hikmah aimed to address this deficiency. It also aimed to promote Islamic values and principles. The institution sought to cultivate scholars who were both knowledgeable and morally upright. Graduates were intended to contribute to society and the nation.

Initially Al Hikmah faced challenges and periods of uncertainty. The institution adapted to changing societal trends. Yet it persisted. After receiving operational permits from the Department of Religion Al Hikmah flourished. Today the institution has significantly expanded its student body and academic programs.

Al Hikmah’s growth highlights the dedication of its founders. It also underscores the community’s commitment to Islamic education. The institution stands as a testament to faith perseverance and a pursuit of academic excellence. Its history is a continuing story of service to its community. The legacy of Al Hikmah remains a valuable asset to Jakarta and Indonesia.
