Discovered by chance imagine that. In 1971 road construction revealed a hidden world. We stand before Akyarlar Mağarası a fossil cave in Antalya. This cave owes its discovery to highway construction.

Akyarlar Mağarası got its name from the Akyarlar area. The cave entrance opens to the sea creating a unique appeal. Inside researchers found a 75-meter-long natural tunnel leading from the sea. Imagine the cool sea breeze.

Look closely at the formations inside Akyarlar Mağarası. Stalactites stalagmites and columns create an interesting scene. Rainwater mixed with soil forms new stalactites. These natural sculptures create a sight worth seeing.

Sadly after new roads and tunnels opened in 2010-2012 Akyarlar Mağarası was abandoned. Nature however continues its work. During the rainy season water droplets still form new features.

Konyaaltı area boasts this cave. Antalya as a whole has many caves. Antalya is rich in cave formations because it lies in the Taurus Mountain range. The Taurus Mountains are mainly limestone which helps cave development. Antalya has around 500 identified caves. Karain Damlataş Dim and Zeytintaşı caves are internationally significant.

Many other caves in Antalya await tourism. These include Kocain Beldibi Sırtlanini and Geyikbayırı. Also Konakaltı Kücükdipsiz and Yerköprü caves.

Alanya has the most caves in Antalya. Kaş follows with eight caves. Akseki has five and Döşemealtı has four. Kemer has three Demre Gündoğmuş and Manavgat each have two. Konyaaltı Finike Gazipaşa İbradı Muratpaşa and Serik each have one. Antalya has 24 land caves 14 sea caves and two underwater caves.

Gazipaşa’s Yalan Dünya Cave is the longest in Antalya. It stretches over four kilometers. İbradı’s Altınbeşik Cave is the second longest. It measures 2500 meters. Let us appreciate Akyarlar Mağarası. It is a reminder of nature’s artistry. Despite being abandoned its beauty endures. Its discovery was accidental but its impact is intentional.
