Founded by migrants from Aksaray in central Turkey Aksaray Mahallesi in Istanbul boasts a rich history. Brought here in the 15th century by Mehmet II these settlers helped repopulate the city after its conquest. This vibrant neighborhood thrives near a bustling square. Its past life as Bos a name derived from Forum Bovis or o Bous speaks to its ancient roots.
Today Aksaray Mahallesi is a melting pot. It has a large population of migrants from Turkey’s southeast. Many restaurants serve the delicious cuisine of Sanliurfa Diyarbakir and Hatay. Recently Syrian refugees have added their own culinary traditions to this diverse mix. Shops and hotels line the streets creating a lively atmosphere.
Aksaray Mahallesi’s strategic location is significant. To the east lies Laleli known for its textile trade. To the west along Millet Caddesi is Capa. Yenikapi is to the south and Fatih to the north. Vatan Caddesi also known as Adnan Menderes Bulvari runs northwest from Aksaray. This road follows the path of the lost Lycos River toward the city walls.
Several notable landmarks dot Aksaray Mahallesi. The Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque stands near the busy Aksaray tram stop. Hidden between Aksaray and Yusufpasa is the Murad Pasha Mosque. Built in 1473 it displays early Ottoman architecture reminiscent of Bursa.
Aksaray Square features the rebuilt Hindiler Tekkesi. This wooden structure stands behind an austere stone fountain. The Camcilar Mosque is also undergoing reconstruction on the square’s edge. A short distance along Vatan Caddesi stands the Fenari Isa Mosque. This building started as the 10th-century Byzantine Church of Constantine Lips. Across the street is the Yavuz Sultan Selim Medrese. Designed by Mimar Sinan in 1549 it now serves as a clinic. Nearby lies the tomb of one of Sultan Selim I’s daughters Sah-i Huban. Partially hidden it’s another creation of Mimar Sinan’s genius.
Aksaray Mahallesi’s transportation is efficient. It’s a starting point for the M1 line running to the former Ataturk International Airport. The Otogar stop serves the large inter-city bus terminus at Esenler. The T1 tram line also provides convenient access. Unfortunately Aksaray Mahallesi also has a darker side. Reports indicate it is a hub for sex trafficking. This issue highlights the complexities of this lively neighborhood.
Despite this Aksaray Mahallesi is a neighborhood of contrasts. Its blend of ancient history modern life and diverse cultures creates a unique character. A walk through its streets reveals a fascinating story of resilience adaptation and the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
