A legacy built on learning. That’s Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School. Right here on South Cornell Avenue.
Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School isn’t just a school. It’s a story woven from two rich threads. The Akiba South Side Jewish Day School founded in 1949. The Solomon Schechter South Side School followed in 1965. They merged in 1972 creating the vibrant institution we see today. This unique blend of Orthodox and Conservative traditions shaped its identity. A testament to unity within diversity.
The school’s journey includes incredible growth. In 1998 Akiba-Schechter purchased two buildings from Congregation Rodfei Zedek. They had already been operating there since 1972. Hoffman House housed the elementary school. A 1965 building served as the preschool. Ten years later a new elementary school building opened. Architect John Ronan designed this award-winning structure. The Chicago Architecture Foundation even recognized its brilliance.
Subsequent renovations transformed the original 1965 building. Upgrades included heating cooling plumbing and electrical systems. Modern windows added to the building’s beauty. The second phase included interior finishes. A new Teacher Resource Library was created. The preschool playground also expanded. These improvements reflect the school’s ongoing commitment to its students and teachers.
Akiba-Schechter’s success extends beyond bricks and mortar. Principal Miriam Kass is an inspiring figure. She has been the school’s president and a highly regarded teacher. Currently she is Director of Teaching and Learning. She embodies the school’s dedication to community and character building.
The preschool itself is a remarkable program. Founded in 1982 it’s now led by Carla Goldberg. A Kohl McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award winner. It’s NAEYC accredited using a play-based Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum. Unique among Jewish schools this preschool welcomes non-Jewish children.
Akiba-Schechter has nurtured remarkable individuals. Caroline Glick a prominent Israeli-American journalist is a notable alumna. Miriam Kass herself also graduated from the school. She received the Steinhart award for excellent teaching. These are just a few examples of the many successes of Akiba-Schechter.
Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School stands as a beacon of Jewish education in Chicago. A place where tradition and innovation intertwine. It’s a place where students not only learn but also grow. It builds a strong foundation for future leaders. A true testament to its enduring legacy.
