Perhaps you have noticed this grand structure before. It is the Akdeniz Cami. This mosque is one of Antalya’s most impressive religious sites. Imagine 15000 people praying here together.
Akdeniz Cami is Antalya’s largest mosque. Its sheer size is remarkable. The Antalya Governor Mürir Karaloğlu inspected the construction. He wanted it completed quickly. The governor asked for donations to finish the Akdeniz Cami. He wanted to open it for Ramadan.
The Akdeniz Cami blends Seljuk Ottoman and modern styles. It covers 35 acres. The dome is 36 meters wide. It rises 42.5 meters high. This makes it one of Turkey’s largest domed structures.
Look up at the main dome of Akdeniz Cami. Notice there is no chandelier. Designers wanted the decorations to shine. Smaller domes around it do have chandeliers.
The Akdeniz Cami has four minarets. They stand 86.5 meters tall. They are built like those of Selimiye Camii. This adds a classical touch. The crescent on top is special. It is hand-hammered copper in the “çeşmi bülbül” style. It stands 7 meters tall.
Over ten thousand tons of stone were used. Much of it is carved intricately. Inside Akdeniz Cami are large carved plaques. They feature prayers. These details make the Akdeniz Cami unique. The Akdeniz Cami can host events. These events could be nationwide. This makes it more than just a mosque. The Akdeniz Cami is a community hub. It welcomes all.
