“Planespotting bliss awaits.” That’s the motto we should have for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Aircraft Viewing Area. Let’s explore this unique spot together. The Aircraft Viewing Area is a place dedicated to watching planes. It is located in the heart of MSP’s airfield.

This isn’t your typical tourist stop. It’s a place for aviation enthusiasts. It is also great for families seeking a free and exciting outing. Imagine watching massive aircraft take off and land. It’s an experience that captivates both young and old.

Back in the day, MSP allowed people right up to the fence. Later, Terminal 1-Lindbergh had an indoor observation deck. But security changes in 2002 closed that option. Finally in 2015, the Aircraft Viewing Area opened.

The MSP Aircraft Viewing Area sits at the end of Cargo Road. It is right next to the FedEx Shipping Center. Don’t worry if you feel like you’re driving in the wrong area. Many first-timers have that feeling. Just follow the road to the end.

Here, you’ll find a small parking lot. There’s also a grassy area equipped with benches and picnic tables. It’s perfect for kids to run around. They can stretch their arms pretending they are airplanes.

When you are at the Aircraft Viewing Area, planes land in front of you. Other planes take off behind you. It’s a thrilling sensory experience. You will see big planes and small “baby” planes.

The Aircraft Viewing Area offers a fantastic perspective. You have an unobstructed view of the runways. You can watch all the activities. The area is open every day from dawn till dusk. There is no entrance fee. You can spontaneously drop by. There aren’t any special security checks.

The Aircraft Viewing Area has 25 parking spaces. Picnic tables and benches are available. You’ll also find garbage and recycling receptacles. Security cameras and lighting are on-site for safety. There is even a sign that details the various planes.

Keep in mind there are no restroom facilities or shelters. Plan accordingly for your visit. Also, remember that alcoholic beverages are not allowed. It can get crowded. There is currently no shady area. Trees have been planted for future shade. It can also be loud. Sensitive children might find it overwhelming.
