What do little league baseball and football have to do with a park? Quite a bit when it comes to Aiello Park. This small park in Chicago is more than just a playground. It is a tribute to a man who deeply cared for his community.

Aiello Park sits in the Belmont-Cragin Community. This 0.39-acre park is a local favorite. You can find it one block west of Austin Avenue. It is also about one and a half blocks south of Grand Avenue.

Aiello Park wasn’t always called that. It was once known as Oak Park. But after John F. Aiello passed away in 1980, things changed. Aiello was a long-time alderman. He served the 36th Ward with passion. People suggested renaming the park in his honor. Why? Because Aiello loved the parks. He actively supported little league baseball and football programs. These programs thrived in the parks within his ward. The Chicago Park District decided to rename Oak Park to Aiello Park. This was a fitting way to remember his contributions.

The history of Aiello Park goes back further. Before it became Oak Park, it was a City park. In 1957, it transferred to the Chicago Park District. This happened through the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act.

Today, Aiello Park offers a lovely playground. Children can laugh and play. Though there are no structured programs at Aiello Park, Riis Park is nearby. It offers many programs.

Interestingly, Aiello Playlot Park was once a former railroad line. It transformed into a park in the 1970s.

The best time to visit Aiello Park is during the summer. The weather is warm and sunny. But the park is open year-round. You can enjoy its facilities in the fall and spring too.

The park is named after a local resident. This person played a crucial role in creating it.

So, next time you visit Aiello Park, remember John F. Aiello. He was a man who loved his community. He supported the local parks and the children who played in them. Aiello Park stands as a testament to his dedication. It reminds us of the importance of community involvement. It also highlights the impact one person can have.
