Opened in 1986, the Ahnepark in Vellmar is a local favorite. This park spans over 9 hectares. That’s 90,000 square meters. It offers a green retreat near Kassel.
The Ahnepark is named after the Ahne River. The Ahne flows along the park’s western edge. This river is a tributary of the Fulda. The park sits at an average elevation of 185 meters above sea level.
Originally, this land was pasture. Now, the Ahnepark features meadows and trees. Shrubbery adds to its natural charm. Four ponds fed by the Ahne River are home to many ducks. The park designers kept many old trees. Some fruit trees from a former garden still remain.
From the park’s artificial hill, you get great views. The Ahnepark also provides information panels about its flora and fauna. The Ahnepark offers many activities. There is a basketball court here. You can also find a combined tennis and volleyball court. Two table tennis tables are available. Children can enjoy the playground.
During the warmer months, events take place here. Concerts are held at the concert area. A miniature steam train operates on some Sundays and holidays. It is run by the Dampfbahnclub Vellmar. The Ahnepark has art too. Sculptures are added every three years.
A café-restaurant with a lakeside terrace sits in the park’s southern part. It has a fountain in one of the ponds. In winter, you might be able to ice skate on a pond. This is only possible if conditions are right.
The Ahnepark hosts annual events. The Ahneparkfest provides entertainment. The Zeltfestival Sommer im Park takes place here too. The Sommerfest im Ahnepark focuses on chess. A section of the Märchenlandweg hiking trail passes through the Ahnepark.
Vellmar decided to create a central recreation zone. This led to the Ahnepark’s opening in 1986. Volunteers built the miniature railway. It operates on specific dates. Flowers and cherry trees dot the park. You can find animals and artworks throughout the Ahnepark.
If you are coming from Kassel, you can follow the Ahne River. It flows through Nordstadtpark to the Fulda River. The Ahnepark has seven entrances. It also offers a toilet facility. You can find a café-restaurant here. Parking spaces are available near the entrances. Enjoy the blend of nature and recreation at the Ahnepark. It is Vellmar’s beloved destination.
