Can you hear the echoes of scholars past? Here at the Ahmediye Medresesi, the stones whisper tales of learning and devotion. Ahmediye Medresesi sits within the courtyard of the Ahmediye Mosque in Üsküdar, Istanbul. It’s a jewel of classical Ottoman architecture. This place wasn’t always called Ahmediye. Until 2008, this area was known as Kefçe Dede Quarter. So, sometimes you’ll hear this complex referred to as the Kefçe Dede Social Complex. It’s a testament to the rich history of Üsküdar. The Ahmediye Medresesi got built in 1721 by Ahmet Agha. He was the Shipyard Treasurer. The complex is more than just the Ahmediye Medresesi. It also houses a primary school, a fountain, a library, a timekeeper’s room, an imaret (a public kitchen), a burial area, and even a tomb. The courtyard doors open onto Gündoğumu Street and Esvapçı Street. The madrasa itself is a two-winged structure with eleven rooms. Each room is simply decorated but functional. It contains a stove for warmth and a cupboard for books. Picture young scholars huddled around these stoves, poring over their texts. The complex has seen its share of challenges. In 1914, the Ahmediye Medresesi suffered significant damage. Just a few years later, in 1918, it provided shelter to immigrants and soldiers. They were part of the Daarülhilafe staff. Today, the madrasa serves as the Üsküdar Müftülüğü Erkek Kur’an Kursu. It continues its legacy of education, now focused on religious studies. Don’t miss the elegant marble fountains in the courtyard. These were also built by Ahmet Agha in 1721. There’s also a three-sided public fountain. It was later repaired by Tiryal Hanım, one of Mahmud II’s favorites. These fountains add to the serene atmosphere of the Ahmediye Medresesi. The Ahmediye Medresesi embodies a long history of scholarship, resilience, and community. It’s a quiet haven amidst the vibrant city, a place where the past speaks to the present.
